Putting the "Arts" into BCAF! This is the fifth fantastic year that we have offered these Saturday workshops, and they grow ever more popular as word spreads. For 2018, we're back in the Millennium Hall with a mixture of old and new activities. Free tea and coffee to participants throughout the afternoon, along with a variety of cakes available to purchase.

We've five different Arts and Crafts workshops, all offering taster sessions, mostly of around two hours each. Take home a mini-project. Materials supplied. Scroll down to see them all

So, who better to tell you about the individual workshops than the artists, themselves?

Graphite Drawing and Illustration with Joanne Stewart

Paint tubesLearn how to draw using graphite pencils or charcoal, or spend a couple of hours improving and honing your skills. No matter what your level, come along and enjoy yourselves.

Joanne says, "The workshop will demonstrate and teach you the techniques needed to draw with graphite or charcoal pencils. Learn how to refine your graphite skills by blending with a variety of tools, undertsand how to use specific erasers, explore a variety of papers and build an understanding of the graphite pencil."

All materials will be provided, or feel free to bring along your own.

Maximum of 10 places per class, one two hour class running from 3PM - 5PM. Places are £8.00 per person.

"I'm Ali from smARTsy, and am bringing a beautiful array of glass in many forms and colours to BCAF's Arts Workshop event at the Millennium Hall. It is my second visit to the Festival.

"Your works of art will be taken away for firing in a kiln offsite, and will be available for collection at the Art Exhibition on 19-20th May at the Congregational Church 

Ticket price (£10) includes materials to make a variety of birds, coasters and hangers. Additonal pieces may be available for purchase on the day.

Willow Weaving with Chaz Friend

willow2018BCAF welcomes back Chaz from Wayside Willow. He seeks to bring the ancient craft of Willow weaving to Twenty First Century learners, engaging them with historical skills and techniques, while cultivating  creative thinking and problem solving.

Chaz says: "l believe we are all created to be creative - its a core part of our humanity. Some people never find that place inside them. I know from experience that willow can help free that creative spark  in people who think of themselves as non-artistic."

Today, Chaz will be guiding you to make a BIRD FEEDER for you to take home.   Add your own choice as to shape, size and weaving style. Suitable for beginners. All materials provided.

Copper Wire Bracelet Workshop with Andrena Porter

Copper Wire Bracelet

Join Andrena for this workshop to create a beautiful wire and gemstone jewellery bracelet for you to keep.

Andrena says, "Hi, my name is Andrena, and I love making jewellery in a variety of media. At this workshop you will get to make a unique piece, a copper heavy wire gauge  bracelet, which can include natural gem stones, beads and embellishments. The bracelet can be textured, and woven with coloured wire or copper wire.

"All the materials, copper, stones and tools are provided. I will help you design, and stage by stage, you'll create this bespoke piece. Suitable for ladies and men, so come and enjoy learning a new craft. Your bracelet is designed to be adjustable to fit any size"

The cost of the workshop is £12, and includes all materials, and you will take home your finished piece. There are limited places (10) for the 2 hour workshop.

Woodblock Printing with Saski and Strawbs

hare tote bagJoin Saski and Strawbs for this hands-on printing workshop based around the ancient art of printing with carved wooden print blocks onto fabric.

You'll produce a "tote" bag (like the one shown) to your own design, to take away.

We will provide a variety of blocks including abstract shapes, fruit, leaves, flowers, insects and animals.

There will be two 45 minute classes starting at 3PM and 4PM. Maximum of 15 people per class. Places are £5.00 per person.

 

Refreshments available in the Millennium Hall,  throughout the afternoon.

Set in a magnificent steel sculpted garden, the story is told using beautifully crafted puppets, a brilliant musical soundtrack and superb storytelling.

MASSIVE street art display from no fewer than fourteen groups of children from schools, churches and other groups around the village. Follow the self guided Elephant Trail from the start of Windsor St up Church St.

The Trail culminates at St Catherines Church, where there is a display by all the participating groups.

A distinguished performance by singer Joanna Eden, with Chris Ingham at the piano present an entertaining evening of anecdote, insight and classic songs associated with the legendary First Lady of Song. With stories of how Ella rose to glory from desperately humble origins and featuring beloved compositions by George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter and other writers of the Golden Age of Popular Song.

Painting Demonstration at the Congregational Church

BCAF is delighterd to be working once again with Hinckley & District Society of Art to bring you this two hour live demonstration by the talented and prolific portrait artist Rob Waring.

Rob was born in South Africa to an English mother & South African father. He grew up in South Africa  but after finishing his education travelled extensively receiving private tuition from various portrait painters in the USA & Europe, as well as studying the techniques of traditional classical painting.

He became a professional portrait painter at the age of 23  and since then has had a very fulfilling career spanning over 40 years.  Rob has painted numerous portraits of people of all nationalities and received many commissions. He has also written articles for various art publications including The Artist (UK) , International Artist & The South African Artist magazines.

Join him this evening for a demonstration of the art of portrait painting.

Last year's guided walk around the Village proved to be a sell out- so we're pleased to be offering another walk this year.

A two-hour World War One walk around Burbage, courtesy of the Burbage Heritage Group. The walk will commemorate momentous events of 100 years ago, and how they impacted our village.

We will start from the car park alonside Hinckley Road recreation ground and we will take in sights (and hear stories) on our stroll around Burbage Village, that have a connection with the Great War. What was life like, a century ago, for families and villagers? How did the war impact them?

Places are limited.  We expect this event to sell out, so please buy your tickets here to avoid dissapointment. Well behaved dogs on leads welcome.

Art Exhibition and Sale of paintings in the Burbage Congregational Church

BCAF are delighted to continue our association with the Hinckley & District Society of Art in bringing you news of an Arts Exhibition and Sale. It takes place over Saturday and Sunday 19 - 20 May (10AM - 4PM both days), in the Burbage Congregational Church (10, Church St, Burbage LE10 2DD).

Entry to this exhibition of works by local artists is absolutley free.

Come along and see the results of their handiwork, and talk to members of the Society. If you are interested in art (painting or drawing) and would wish to meet with like-minded people, they would love to meet you! There will be hands on demonstrations and also a children’s section to try their hand.

 Arts1As well as organising artwork display exhibitions such as this, The Hinckley Society of Arts meet on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, here in the Congregational Church. They feature demonstrations from guest speakers, as well as the newly formed Art Club offering classes for people of any ability. A warm welcome to all is always assured.
